The Department:
The Medicine Board is one of three clinical boards in the trust. The board is led by a Medical Director and incorporates the divisions of Infection, Clinical Support and Pathology, Critical Care, Emergency Services, Medical Specialties.
The Clinical Support and Pathology Division comprises of Pathology, Dietetics, Therapies, Transport, Pharmacy, Telecommunications, Referral and booking and Medicines Management.
The Role:
The Specialist Practitioner of Transfusion is a key contributor to patient safety, staff training/ education and the cost-effective use of blood and blood components within the Trust. They will be required to educate and train nursing, medical, and multidisciplinary staff in the management of patients receiving blood and blood components / transfusion process and in ensuring that agreed guidelines and protocols are followed satisfactorily.
The role provides an interface between the laboratory and clinical services. The role is required to enable the Foundation Trust to fulfil all statutory and mandatory regulations pertinent to the post. For example, Blood Quality and Safety Regulations 2005, Better Blood Transfusion Health Service Circulars (HSC) 1998/224 and HSC 2002/ 009 and compliance with relevant National Patient Safety Agency Safe Practice Notices, as well as meet relevant CQC and NHSLA risk management for trusts standards and contribute to laboratory inspection.
The role supports the appropriate use of blood products and initiatives to reduce the use of donated blood products and reduce wastage of blood components.
The role is fundamental to support local clinical governance for blood transfusion related errors occurring outside the laboratory, in addition to the mandatory/ legal requirement to externally report reactions and errors to the SHOT scheme and MHRA via SABRE.
In addition, the Transfusion Practitioner role provides specialist advice & support for staff and patients. The post holder will be expected to initiate & participate in the development/ review / update of guidelines and policies pertaining to blood component transfusion/ administration.
The post holder will ensure positive service user experience by improving the quality of care by proactively promoting evidence based safe transfusion practice, alongside other relevant regulatory requirements, and standards. The post holder will be a source of expert knowledge of all blood transfusion processes, in the clinical environment and will be responsible for ensuring clarity around all standards of transfusion related care and services, alongside other members of the Transfusion Practitioner team.
The post holder will actively collaborate with other members of Hospital Transfusion Team in the planning and implementation of new projects within the speciality and promote a positive culture for change, always ensuring regulatory compliance.
Knowledge & understanding of the audit and research process is essential. The post holder will be expected to initiate / undertake and collaborate in, research / clinical audit appropriate to the service.
Requirements:
- Registered Nurse/ BMS
- Relevant post-registration/graduate programme
- Relevant post registration experience in relevant specialty
- Completed/completing master’s degree or can provide evidence of relevant equivalent experience / training whilst working at a senior level.
- Demonstrates up to date knowledge and expertise in the specialty
- Evidence of developing & leading nurse / BMS led services/ clinics.
- Evidence of ability to work collaboratively / Autonomously
- Knowledge of key professional issues and NMC/ HPC standards/ guidelines relating to professional practice.
