Band 4 - Rehab Support Worker - Barts - London

St Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts) are searching for an experienced and passionate Band 4 Rehab Support Worker to join their highly skilled team.

Our group of hospitals provide a huge range of clinical services to people in east London and beyond.

We operate from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to our services to provide them with the healthcare they need.

The Role:

  • To provide skilled routine, and some non-routine, clinical and non-clinical support to the Therapy team.
  • To accept patient referrals to therapy (in accordance with departmental guidelines) and assess and treat according to protocols and guidelines monitoring patient progression, making alterations to patient treatment programs as required, and discharging when appropriate.
  • To maintain close communication with the mulit-disciplinary team to facilitate patient care.
  • To provide clerical assistance to the team To actively participate in team and departmental in-service training.
  • Work alongside registered therapist in the induction of new staff .
  • To carry out other duties deemed necessary to ensure adequate provision of service. 

 Clinical / operational responsibilities

  • To accept patients allocated by the Therapists.
  • To gather and provide routine information both to and from patients, family, carers, hospital notes, other health care and community professionals. This would include identifying conflicting elements from different sources, and with feedback to the Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.
  • To gain patient consent and be able to work within a legal framework with those patients who are unable to give informed consent.
  • To provide a support role in assisting the Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist or Therapy Assistant in performing functional assessments as needed.
  • To undertake routine functional assessments, with access to the Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist for support as required; and know when to refer back to the registered Therapist for assessment.
  • To use information gained from assessment to develop a problem list and proposed intervention options.
  • To action intervention as required following discussion with a registered therapist.
  • To prepare the patient for treatment by self or as directed by a therapist e.g. ensuring patient suitably dressed. This may involve moving and handling and personal care.
  • To be able to assess a patients’ response to activities and decide on appropriate action. This will involve updating the registered Therapist; and as appropriate summoning assistance and altering the programme of activities.
  • To carry out intervention and/or activities with individuals and groups, with access to supervision from a registered member of staff. This may involve moving and handling, and personal care.
  • To participate with the Therapists in off site visits and to be able to independently complete the same. To take the lead where appropriate. This may also include booking transport, preparing patients and equipment and assisting with functional assessments.
  • Following appropriate training, to assess and monitor allocated patients for equipment in the home e.g. walking aids and Activities of daily living equipment. This may involve undertaking off site visits with/and without a registered therapist. Issue appropriate equipment and teach safe usage, following agreed protocols.
  • To ensure the patients comfort needs are met after intervention E.g. drinks available as appropriate, provide means to contact nursing staff. Seek assistance from an appropriate source as required.

  • To prepare and restore the environment before and after intervention E.g. clearing the bed space area or ensuring the intervention area is appropriately set up for intervention.
  • To prepare the equipment required for intervention by self or as directed by the Therapist e.g. Walking Aids/ Activities of Daily Living Equipment .
  • To transport patients to and from the intervention areas as required by self or as directed by the Therapist.
  • To complete and send therapy reports for packages of care, for routine patients identified by the registered therapist.
  • To effectively use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to engage and negotiate with patients across a multicultural and intellectual spectrum. This will include patients who may be elderly, frail or vulnerable, and have difficulties with understanding or communicating, E.g. vision/hearing impaired, dysphasic, cognitively impaired or those who do not have English as a first language.
  • To have a sound knowledge of normal physiological values e.g. blood pressure and temperature in order to be able to identify deviations from the norm and the implications for treatment. To be aware of potential adverse physical and psychological effects of therapy intervention, and report any such effects to the Therapist or MDT.
  • To communicate the routine therapeutic needs of the patient to the MDT to ensure continuity of care.
  • To deputise for registered staff members, for communication purposes only, at board rounds.
  • To contact other agencies to discuss any changes in patient status or any technical requirements the patient may have.
  • To be able to take and make telephones calls and emails as required and take accurate messages ensuring they are followed up.
  • To order and issue loan equipment according to departmental and local guidelines.
  • To carry out basic maintenance and cleaning of equipment in line with department and Trust guidelines. E.g. ADL equipment, mobility aids and wheelchairs. Reporting any losses and damage to the appropriate person as indicated by Trust policy.

Requirements:

  • Educated to G.C.S.E level or equivalent.
  • Evidence of recent training and CPD - Willingness to follow a training programme which may involve course work.
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions accurately and learn new skills quickly.
  • Effective spoken communication in english.
  • Ability to communicate information (verbal, non verbal and written) in an accurate, clear and logical manner.
  • Ability to understand and work within the Trust’s policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to work at moderate to intense physical effort throughout the day.
  • Ability to cope working in a stressful environment and with emotional or aggressive patients and carers.
