Job Purpose
As a Ward Orderly, you will provide high-quality support to patients, relatives and clinical teams under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Registered Healthcare Professional.
You will play a vital role in delivering safe, effective and compassionate care, while supporting patients from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds.
The role involves providing personal care, assisting with daily living activities and working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Registered Healthcare Professional, you will:
Patient Care
- Assist with personal care, including washing, dressing, toileting and grooming.
- Support patients with activities of daily living.
- Assist with moving and handling patients safely.
- Ensure patients are positioned safely and comfortably.
- Support the prevention of pressure ulcers.
- Assist with meeting patients' nutritional and hydration needs.
- Support patients during mealtimes and complete food charts where required.
- Monitor and report any concerns regarding patient wellbeing.
Clinical Support
- Undertake delegated clinical duties such as collecting specimens.
- Accurately record and report information in line with Trust procedures.
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team.
Maintaining a Safe Environment
- Help maintain a clean, safe and tidy ward environment.
- Ensure bed spaces, treatment rooms, sluices, storage areas and equipment are maintained appropriately.
- Support the security and confidentiality of patients' belongings and information.
- Adhere to all relevant Trust policies and procedures.
Team Working
- Participate in ward and departmental meetings.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across multidisciplinary teams.
- Support the induction and training of junior Healthcare Assistants and students where appropriate.
- Manage workload effectively and seek guidance when required.
Professional Responsibilities
- Demonstrate compassionate, person-centred care at all times.

- Act as an advocate for patients and their families.
- Maintain compliance with all statutory, mandatory and role-specific training requirements.

Orderly Programme Requirements
The Ward Orderly Programme works alongside the Trust's NHS Care Certificate Programme, providing participants with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to deliver safe, compassionate and effective patient care within the NHS.
As part of the programme, successful candidates will be required to:
- Attend 4 Healthcare Assistant (HCA) Induction Days following completion of all onboarding requirements.
- Attend a half-day Care Certificate training session.
- Complete the NHS Care Certificate within 6 months of attending the HCA induction programme.
To support successful completion of the programme and achievement of the Care Certificate within the required timeframe, participants will be expected to commit to working a minimum of:
- 3 weekday long-day shifts per week
This commitment is essential to ensure sufficient clinical exposure, completion of Care Certificate standards and successful achievement of programme objectives within the required timescales.
Failure to maintain sufficient shift volume or demonstrate progress towards completion of the Care Certificate may result in removal from the Ward Orderly Programme and could ultimately affect your continued employment within the BHR Bank. Our aim is to support all participants to successfully complete the programme and progress within their healthcare careers.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Applicants must have:
- A minimum of 6 months' UK care home or nursing home experience.
- English and Maths qualifications at Level A-C (or equivalent), or a willingness to work towards achieving them.
- Excellent written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.
- Good organisational and time management abilities.
- The ability to remain calm and work effectively under pressure.
- A caring, compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
- Strong listening skills.
- A flexible and reliable approach to work.
- A willingness to learn and develop new skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Currently undertaking training as a Student Nurse or Student Allied Health Professional and has completed at least one clinical placement.
- Previous experience working within healthcare teams.
