We are seeking an experienced Band 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant for Haematology and Blood Transfusion

We operate from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to our services to provide them with the healthcare they need.
About Pathology Partnership
The NHS East & South East London Pathology Partnership (Pathology Partnership) is being created to form a network across three NHS Trusts: Barts Health (which will become the host), Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership will be based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
Main duties, responsibilities and results areas
Technical and scientific
- To receive, sort and number all incoming samples and request forms.
- To receive, distribute and process samples and goods.
- To check and verify all patient sample demographics
- To centrifuge and separate blood samples, aliquot urine collections and to store all samples according to departmental guidelines.
- To collect specimens from ward and clinic areas.
- Undertake specimen preparation (centrifugation, sample separation, sort label )
- To sort specimens for storage, retrieval and disposal.
- To monitor outstanding work and check back lists in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- To carry out general laboratory cleaning, clearing and tidying duties as required.
- Assist with the maintenance of equipment e.g. record & collate fridge & freezer temperatures, and defrost and clean refrigerators, freezers and centrifuges.
- Deal with visitors to the department professionally, such as patients or staff delivering specimens, couriers or other visitors.
- To maintain good work relations with all members of staff and to promote effective teamwork.
- Take telephone messages and answer or refer telephone queries as appropriate on to Reception Supervisors or qualified BMS staff.
- Maintain clear, full and accurate records of all work carried out manually or on computer as required.
- Assist other laboratory staff in the performance of their duties.
- Assist in the safe collection and disposal of laboratory waste.
- Assist in the distribution of reagents, other materials and consumables and equipment.
- Sorting, logging and despatch of clinical samples to other hospitals.
- Provide results over the telephone where appropriate.
- Participate in department rosters working late, early, weekends and nights shifts where needed.
Laboratory Informatics
- To have good keyboard and IT skills to use the laboratory information systems.
- To enter details from each specimen and request form into laboratory information systems.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, instrument specific software, specialised data management software and laboratory information system.
- Comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory information.
- Record relevant information accurately on the laboratory information system and Intermediary systems.
- Ensure records are kept up to date and stored safely to ensure compliance with ISO 15189 standards.
Qualifications, Skill and Experience
- At least 1 year’s experience working in a laboratory/hospital environment.
- Previous experience working with a large medical laboratory.
- Able to provide references to cover 3 years
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
