Blood Transfusion Scientific Lead - Band 8A - Royal London

About the Role

As the Scientific Lead for Blood Transfusion, you will play a pivotal role in leading and managing transfusion services across the Pathology Partnership. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with MHRA, UKAS ISO15189, and SHOT standards, while driving service development, quality improvement, and staff training.

This is a strategic and operational leadership role, with approximately 80% management and 20% scientific/technical responsibilities. You will work closely with clinical, scientific, and operational teams across multiple sites to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and innovative transfusion services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage transfusion laboratories and staff across the Partnership.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Oversee quality management systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Drive staff training, development, and performance management.
  • Manage budgets, resources, and procurement processes.
  • Represent transfusion services at internal and external meetings, including Hospital Transfusion Committees.
  • Support research, development, and clinical trial activities.


What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
  • At least 6 months paid NHS experience in the last 3 years.
  • HCPC registration.
  • Significant experience in Blood Transfusion at Band 7 level or above.
  • Proven leadership and management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of MHRA, ISO15189, and quality systems.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organisational skills.

Desirable:

  • BBTS Specialist Certificate or equivalent.
  • Recognised management qualification.
  • Experience in service development and business planning.

Working Pattern

  • Shifts will be 9:00 - 17:30 Monday to Friday
  • Role will be available until 31/10/2025
