Band 3 - Dispensing Assistant - Kingston - London

Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust are hiring a passionate and skilled Dispensing Assistant to join their team.

Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust was established in 2024 to bring health and care services closer together for local people.

We provide community care in the London borough of Richmond, and we work in partnership with Your Healthcare who provide community care in Kingston. We also provide a full range of acute services at Kingston Hospital, and short-stay rehabilitation at Teddington Memorial Hospital.

We serve a wider population for a range of specialist services. This includes hospital and outpatient services for people in Elmbridge (Surrey), Merton, Wandsworth and Sutton, and community immunisations for most of south London.

Job Summary

To work with the Pharmacy team to support the supply of medicines to patients and wards. To be involved in delivering an effective pharmacy service.

Duties will include but not limited to dispensing, stock management in dispensary, stores and wards, training and supporting junior/new staff.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

  1. To dispense clinically screened prescriptions including labelling, preparation, assembly and dispensing accurately in a timely manner.
  2. To dispense CD’s for Discharges and Ward Stocks and check stock levels.
  3. To dispense Chemotherapy for patients on our Haematology Day Unit.
  4. To assist with returns and destructions of medications from Wards.

    Communications:

  1. To develop effective communication between the staff in the Pharmacy and on wards and departments.

    Administrative:

  1. To ensure that accurate records are maintained either electronically or in paper copy.
  2. To ensure that sundry materials are available and ordered when necessary.
  3. To file prescriptions and recover prescriptions when required including end of day and end of month filing.
  4. To correctly use the Prescription Tracking System (PTS) and monitor it throughout the day.
  5. To act as the Co-ordinator to manage telephones and emails and ensure deadlines are met.
  6. To regularly complete stock and expiry date checks in the Dispensary.

    Governance:

  1. To monitor storage conditions within procedures including items with specific restrictions, eg fridge items and vaccines.

Technical:

  1. To prepare extemporaneous medication required for individual patients.
  2. To distribute medicines to wards and departments.
  3. To assess ward and department medicines requirements as part of the “top-up” service.
  4. To ensure that wastage of medicines is minimised by correct stock rotation and correct storage.
  5. To order and requisition stock.
  6. To dispense and record the issue of Controlled Drugs To receive and enter Controlled Drugs.
  7. To supply “to follow” items and “repeat” items in accordance with patient needs.
  8. To undertake regular stock-takes.
  9. To maintain expiry date checking and ensure it is up to date.
  10. To cover the specified duties of technicians/dispensing assistants when necessary.

Requirements

  • Level 2 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent qualification
  • Maths & English GCSE grade A-C or equivalent qualifications
  • Customer service experience in the work place
  • Pharmacy experience
  • Previous dispensing experience
  • Numerate
  • Accuracy and good attention to detail
  • Good communication skills on both a written and verbal basis
  • Team worker
  • Willing to learn
  • Reliable
  • Adaptable
  • Good timekeeping
  • Participation in weekend, Bank Holiday and late duty rotas as required
  • Travel and work to other sites if requested
