Band 4 - Therapy Technician - North Middlesex - London

North Middlesex University Hospital (North Mid) are searching for a passionate and experienced Band 4 Therapy Technician to join their highly skilled Inpatient Rehabilitation, Reablement & Recovery team based at Chase Farm Hospital.

Please note that you may be required to work at another site – Magnolia unit, St Michael’s site or any other location of the Trusts interests.

JOB SUMMARY: 

The post holder will be an integral member of the Inpatient rehabilitation team & MDT. 

This service provides short term Inpatient nursing and therapy services to patients admitted for rehabilitation, reablement and recovery promoting independence and encouraging integration back to the community. The post holder will provide therapy assessments and interventions within the remit of their role to inpatients under the supervision of the senior therapy clinicians within the team. 

The post holder will support the therapy team take short term responsibility for the effective planning and delivery of care to patients in alongside other team members and in communication with other MDT colleagues. 

The post holder will be required to support the delivery of rehabilitation and recovery programmes including individualised and group based therapeutic sessions and education / enabling programmes and to visit patients in their own homes to carry out prescribed treatment and assess for and provide appropriate mobility aids and equipment directly or by prescription. 

The post holder will work alone with access to a qualified therapy team member for support and supervision as required and will be expected to use a degree of initiative while working within the parameters of the team’s policies and procedures. 

The postholder may be required to work at various sites as part of the role to support Inpatient services, including out in the community in people’s homes and be part of a 7 day therapy service as directed by the Integrated Therapies Lead. 

This is a summary of the main areas of the job and will be subject to periodic review in conjunction with the post holder.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

To undertake clinical work delegated by the qualified therapy staff including Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist and at times by a Speech & Language therapist & Dietitian.

To be responsible for a designated caseload of patients. 

To work effectively as a member of a team in providing a programme of ward based therapeutic activities - individual & group based. 

To contribute to all stages of the therapeutic process including:  

Information gathering through liaison with clients, their informal carers, and colleagues from health and other agencies. 

Completing simple assessments, through interview and observation of functional tasks. 

Provision of aids and equipment.  

Identifying needs and forming goals and plans for interventions. 

Completing a wide range of interventions including: - giving therapeutic advice; mobility, transfers, functional, ADL based rehabilitation programmes, enabling self-management of conditions through patient and carer education, home assessments and home-based therapy programmes, equipment assessment, prescription and safe use within the ward based as well as home environment. 

Evaluating patient progress through regular re-assessment and ensuring continuous progression by graded activity through a 1:1 or groups-based approach. 

Contribute to formal therapy assessments and provide feedback. 

Review of patients after completion of minor adaptations to home environment. 

Discharge planning including completion of appropriate referrals and reports, home visits and follow up visits as directed by the qualified therapy staff. 

To use clinical reasoning within your role remit throughout the therapeutic process providing a rationale for your assessment, interventions and changes in patient presentation.  

To carry out rehabilitation programmes as delegated by clinical staff with understanding of the patient’s clinical presentation and how it impacts their recovery. 

To recognise changes in a patient’s condition and report to the appropriate health professional/allocated therapist.  

Undertake delegated tasks to contribute to the safe and smooth running of the service. 

The post requires the use of equipment and skills that necessitates the use of specific therapeutic handling and management techniques. 

To liaise with the MDT and external agencies with regard to individual patients as required. 

To adhere to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and all other relevant policies and procedures local and trust wide. 

To respond promptly to any incident where service quality has fallen below an acceptable standard and report to supervisor, the clinical team leader or team manager.  

To utilise varied communication techniques and resources to ensure two way understanding e.g. non-verbal, hearing and visual impairments cultural / language differences including via the use of an interpreter. 

To provide patients with general information and advice on a range of services that could meet their need and quality of life, referring on to the partnership services e.g. local authority, voluntary sectors as needed. 

To form appropriate relationships with patients and their families and communicate with them in a way that respects their views, autonomy and culture. 

To participate in the induction, training and education of students and other staff in this setting. 

To provide practical training to less experienced staff within the team regarding therapeutic activity, walking aids and equipment. 

To seek guidance for prioritising and management of workload and for each patient on the caseload through active participation in regular supervision using reflective practice.  

Requirements:

  • Must have previous experience as a Therapy Technician.
  • Experience of working without direct supervision.
  • Effective listening & communication skills to support patients who may be agitated or distressed or who may have communication difficulties.
  • Ability to use own initiative within role.
  • Demonstrate a flexible approach to work demands and recognize the need to support other team members.
