Management Functions:
 Act as a mentor to junior staff and create a positive learning culture by supporting skill acquisition and competency development.
 Provide teaching to all students and new staff as part of an ongoing development programme.
 Participate in local audits.
 Act up as the daily coordinator in the absence of the Junior Sister if required.

Clinical Functions:
 Take an in-depth history and evaluate existing and previously unknown health issues.
 Demonstrate the ability to perform a full, clinical, physical assessment.
 Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to be able to conduct heart and lung assessments & ECG recognition.
 Demonstrate and apply clinical decision-making skills to all clinical specialties; Liase with specialist teams to create and organise pre-operative care management plans that ensure patient optimisation prior to surgery.
 Ensure that appropriate pre-operative investigations are ordered and that abnormal findings are actioned as required.
 Work autonomously and independently and prioritise referrals to internal and external stakeholders, including anaesthetic referrals.
 Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to ensure that all information is disseminated accurately to patients, relatives, members of the multi-disciplinary team and other depts.
 Provide clear explanations to patients and their relatives/carers regarding planned procedures and any pre-operative instructions that will ensure a smooth patient pathway from admission to discharge.
 Maintain patient dignity and respect, and equality and diversity as per Trust Policies.


Qualifications and Experience


• Current RN/AHP, registration with NMC/HcPC  any other relevant post registration qualifications
• Evidence of study at Degree level /Experience  in relevant field  
• Evidence of recent CPD
• Managing resources and contributing to departmental budget
• Evidence of developing policy, guidelines and managing resources 
• An awareness of research and evidence based practice relevant to clinical area


• Computer literate, knowledge of patient administration system 

• Clinically competent at Band 5.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Teaching and mentoring skills
• Team building skills
• Ability to prioritise workload, instruct and direct others 
• Organisational skills and able to work as part of a team
• Able to support development of others
• Articulate and knowledgeable of current professional nursing issues 
• Health promotion 


• Ability to adapt to change within working situation 
• Intravenous Therapy Skills 
• Mentors Course
