Occupational Health Clinic Nurse – Band 5

As a large teaching Trust located in north east London, BHRUT provides care for a population of more than 750,000 people across three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of the 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. 

BHRUT is a centre of excellence, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. The Trust operates two emergency departments and offers a full range of acute services. They have a neuroscience centre, a cancer centre, and a hyper acute stroke unit to provide specialist care. In addition, they were the first Trust in the UK to introduce Varian Halcyon radiotherapy which helps reduce treatment times for cancer patients.

This post is to support the Occupational Health team and to enhance the quality of service provided to the Trust and other clients. The role is varied, reflecting the demands of the Occupational Health Service. The post-holder will undertake clinical duties, including health surveillance, immunisations and paper screening as well as required administrative duties. This will be in response to requests from the Head of Service and the needs of the service. The post-holder will be proactive and have a flexible approach in order to positively influence the health of employees.

Clinical/Operational responsibilities

  • To undertake health surveillance for external clients, in a peripatetic role
  • Undertake pre-placement paper screening of Pre-Placement Assessments, and face to face pre-placement screening and provide advice regarding clearance
  • To undertake individual client assessment, and then carry out as appropriate, clinical tasks including venepuncture, vaccinations, and BCG scar checks in line with specified protocol, in line with PGD’s/ written instructions and ensuring correct client identification and sample labelling
  • To undertake statutory and non-statutory health surveillance, including lung function testing, vision screening and urinalysis.
  • To receive, interpret and take appropriate action on pathology results received within the department.
  • To be responsible, alongside the Occupational Health Advisors for the maintenance and ordering of vaccinations and clinical stock, with a good working relationship with the pharmacy and stores departments.
  • To be responsible for daily checking of required equipment, preparation for external visits and ensuring the Resuscitation equipment, including emergency drugs are in full working order.
  • Complete the daily nursing duties which may include management of infectious disease outbreaks, such as TB, and working collaboratively with other BHRUT departments during this process.
  • Assist OHAs in providing an emergency (in opening hours) response service for incidents such as sharps and needlestick injuries and other immediate health issues.

Important Requirements:

  • NMC Registration
  • At least 6 months NHS experience in that last 3 years
  • Previous OH experience
  • Robust clinical knowledge, strong initiative, and a proactive approach to work
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Honesty and integrity, and a caring patient-centred approach
