Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Portsmouth

We have exciting opportunities for experienced Biomedical Scientist band 6 to join the Staff Bank, based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.

Job Purpose

  1. To carry out investigations on samples of tissue to diagnose disease and monitor the treatment of patients.
  2. Assist in the provision of reliable and accurate analytical data for the Trust, in accordance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards
  3. To work as part of a team of Biomedical Scientists, Consultant Histopathologists and support staff to deliver, within budget, a patient-orientated medical laboratory service to contribute to efficient and effective care.

Specific Core Functions

 Technical:

  1. To participate in the provision of the Histopathology service, rotating in all areas of the department
  2. To undertake preventative maintenance schedules on laboratory instruments prior to use
  3. To prepare and store high cost reagents for use in laboratory investigations
  4. To perform manual and semi-automated laboratory investigations, in a safe, efficient and timely manner including tissue transfer and some specimen dissection
  5. To measure and monitor the accuracy of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures
  6. To undertake validation of complex results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols

  8. To plan and organise individual work within the demands of the team
  9. To oversee the calibration of laboratory instruments.
  10. To participate in the pre-analytical and post-analytical processing of specimens and laboratory results.

 Scientific

  1. To participate in method and laboratory instrument evaluation 
  2. To participate in research and development 
  3. To carry out the above with the aim of maximising the quality of our service and minimising the costs

 Clinical

  1. To participate in the processing and reporting of time-sensitive Cellular Pathology samples
  2. To participate in the processing and evaluation of Histopathology samples
  3. To maintain the nationally required standard by laboratory participation in relevant External Quality Assurance schemes
  4. To participate in clinical audits, as required.
  5. To ensure Consultant Pathologists are aware of any results requiring urgent clinical actions

Laboratory Informatics

  1. To comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other laboratory information
  2. To use the Laboratory Information System according to the authorised protocols
  3. To maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases
  4. To undertake training to ensure awareness of changes in the information systems.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Demonstrable extensive relevant experience post HCPC registration in current Cellular Pathology methodologies
  • In depth knowledge and experience of all aspects of Histopathology.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work.
  • Excellent IT skills, including email, the internet, software, and particular strength in Excel, Word and using databases
