Band 2 - Pharmacy Assistant - BHRUT
We provide care for a population of around 750,000 people across north east London (NEL) and that number is predicted to increase by 15 per cent over the next ten years. We serve three London boroughs with diverse populations, and more than half of our workforce identify as Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic. In addition, eight out of every ten employees are women, and most of our workforce lives within the host boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, and Redbridge.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London - in 2019/20, emergency and urgent attendances (Type 1 & 2) were 189,518 and there were nearly 65,000 ambulance arrivals at both sites.
Hours of work: Weekends, late shifts and Bank holiday.

Clinical / operational responsibilities:
- Carry out basic duties under the direction of the Dispensary Manager according to Standard Operating Procedures including receiving prescriptions, answering telephone queries, collecting statistics etc.
- Dispense medication against pharmacist written requisitions for in-patients, signed discharge and out-patient prescriptions, under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
- Receive in prescriptions from patients and take payments where appropriate.
- Deal with enquiries from patients and nursing and other hospital staff.
- Assist with the checking and replenishment of stock for the emergency drug room.
- Assist with the maintenance and distribution of emergency drug boxes.
- Assist with the replenishment of bottles, cartons and bags within the dispensary
- Receiving pharmaceutical goods in the Dispensary.
- Assist with issuing white hospital prescriptions and FP10 prescriptions to hospital clinics.
- Assist in the management of stock within the Pharmacy
- Attend relevant training courses as required.
- To participate in continuing education and training relevant to post
- To attend Fire, Health and Safety and other mandatory Trust training as required.
- To undertake continuing professional or personal development as required
- Dispense controlled drugs from stock books, discharge prescriptions and out-patient prescriptions maintaining accurate records in the controlled drug registers and stock levels on the shelves
- Assist with preparing the pharmacy delivery bags ready for delivery to the wards
- Use the Prescription Tracking systems (PTS) to track prescriptions in and out of the department as required
- Assist with the disposal of drugs returned from the wards and departments to the dispensary
- Assist with departmental temperature monitoring
- Assist with the training of new staff
- Assist with providing a top-up service to the wards if required
- To sell OTC medicines under the supervision of the responsible pharmacist
- Carry out such alternative duties appropriate to the grade as may necessarily be required, from time to time, be required
Important Requirements:
- Previous hospital pharmaceutical experience
- Previous experience with automated dispensing systems
- An empathic, caring approach to patients, and a great team player
- An honest individual with patience and integrity, with a willingness to learn and grow
- Excellent administrative, IT, verbal, and written communication skills
