Medical Laboratory Assistant - Band 3 - UCLH - London

The Role:

The Medical Laboratory Assistant will perform the pre-analytical preparation of both routine and specialised investigations which is a key function of the laboratory. These are carried out on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood, plasma and other biological materials in accordance with local standard operating procedures. They will independently manage their own workload with direct/indirect supervision from Band 7 Specimen reception Supervisors and Laboratory managers (Consultant Clinical Scientist and Deputy Lab manager). The MLA will collect/refer samples and deliveries from ION and NHNN departments as required.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide a welcoming service to clinicians and colleagues.
  • Provide basic clinical pre analytical technical services, including the operation of manual, automated and computerised systems to support the team of Biomedical, Clinical Scientists and MTOs who undertake the technical work in the laboratory.
  • Process, aliquot and safely store samples received for specialist testing in the Neuroimmunology and CSF Department.
  • Follow departmental operating procedures for laboratory analyses and assist in maintenance and upkeep of equipment used as required e.g. monitoring the temperature of key pieces of equipment.
  • Assist in all the pre analytical areas of the Neuroimmunology Service using laboratory equipment as required ensuring a smooth flow of work. To collect or refer items to/ from ION reception or NHNN and prioritise samples for urgent testing.
  • Perform simple automated testing in the Neuroimmunology Laboratory.

Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A caring, empathetic approach to all patients.
  • A proactive and professional work ethic.
  • Science subject at GCSE level or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 months experience as an MLA.
