Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) are searching for an experienced and passionate Specialist Dental Nurse to join their highly skilled and motivated team.

GOSH is an international centre of excellence in child healthcare. GOSH is a recognised centre for training in paediatric intensive care medicine, being one of the largest for children in the UK and Europe. The Role:
The department delivers Paediatric and Restorative dentistry, Orthodontics and Maxillofacial surgery to children under the care of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) who, because of their medical history, are unable to access this care elsewhere.

The department sees over 5,000 patients each year as outpatients within the department. The inpatient workload is just under 300 episodes.

We also have an in-house dental laboratory service which supports the department.

The successful applicant will assist in the treatment of patients with medical histories including craniofacial anomalies, infectious diseases, high risk conditions, complex skin disorders and high dependency patients with mental and physical disabilities.  The role also includes general housekeeping and admin duties.

The role involves working as a member of the Dental Nursing team supporting the clinicians with delivering treatment within a department, ward and theatre setting.  The team delivers care to both NHS patients and International Paying Patients.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the surgery is welcoming and prepared for the type of patient and treatment planned including all relevant laboratory work and study models
  • Dental charting on Electronic Patient Records (EPIC)
  • Provide pre and post op instructions to the patient in agreement with the clinician
  • To chaperone and act as an advocate for the patients and families before, during and after treatment; always ensuring confidentiality
  • Constantly interpret the needs of patients, carers and clinicians and respond in a prompt and efficient manner
  • Deliver high levels of cross infection control and adhere to all Trust Infection Control Procedures at all time
  • Liaise with external and internal laboratories to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of dental work
  • Assist in treating patients in a theatre environment alongside Consultant and Junior Dentist
  • Assist in treating patients using inhalation sedation
  • Deliver Oral Health Information to inpatients and outpatients
  • Assist with Intra-Oral scanning
  • Provide professional and expert care throughout all our specialties.
  • Perform stock control duties i.e stock rotation, checking of expiry dates, maintenance of stock levels and ensuring adherence to Trust policies and relevant guidelines
  • Ensure that all Trust policy and guidance protocols are understood and followed in relation to health and safety, clinical governance, infection control, information governance etc
  • Filing of patient study models

Requirements:

  • Experience of working part of a diverse team
  • Experience of contributing to an inclusive workplace culture
  • Dental Nurse National Certificate/ NVQ Level 3 Oral Health Care
  • Current registration with the General Dental Council
  • Additional post-qualification certificate
  • Be able to work under own initiative with manager/ clinician available for reference
  • Considerable post qualification experience in practical dental nursing
  • Experience of working in the general, community or hospital dental setting
  • Experience of working with general anaesthetic/ sedation/ special needs environment
  • Literate, numerate and able to communicate at all levels.
  • Ability to fit into a team, positive attitude, flexible, willing to contribute to the team, organised, patient focused and well presented
  • Basic computer skills and familiar with Electronic Patient Records system or Dental software
  • Tact and empathy when dealing with patient/carer and colleagues
  • A team-oriented approach with the willingness to cover colleagues during periods of annual leave or sickness
  • Competent in Intra-Oral scanning
  • Experience and competency in sedation
