The Royal United Hospital are searching for an experienced and passionate Emergency Department Nurse to join their highly skilled team.

We also provide specialist services for rheumatology, chronic pain and chronic fatigue syndrome/ME via the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases which we acquired in 2015.

The Role:As an Emergency Department Nurse you will assess patients upon arrival, prioritize care based on medical urgency, administer emergency medications and treatments, and collaborate closely with physicians, paramedics, and multidisciplinary specialists. You must maintain composure, make rapid clinical decisions, and deliver compassionate communication to patients and their families under high-pressure conditions.

Main Duties and Responsibilites:

Patient Triage: Rapidly evaluate incoming patients to determine the severity of illness or injury and assign priority for medical intervention.

Clinical Care & Interventions: Start intravenous (IV) lines, draw blood, perform wound care, administer emergency pharmacology, and assist with minor operations or trauma procedures.

Monitoring & Stabilization: Continuously track vital signs, run diagnostic tests (such as ECGs or lab work), and stabilize critical or near-death scenarios.

Documentation & Communication: Maintain accurate, legible medical records and keep family members informed of test results and treatment plans.

Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse (Adult Level 1) with active, unrestricted registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Nursing Degree or Diploma (or equivalent qualification)
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
  • Knowledge of current evidence-based practice in acute or emergency care.
  • At least 6 months of relevant experience at the NHS within the last 3 years.
  • Ability to rapidly assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care under pressure.
  • Competence in patient triage and prioritizing care based on clinical severity.
  • Proficiency in using electronic patient records (EPR) and digital tracking systems.
  • High-level written and verbal communication skills to deal with distressed patients, anxious relatives, and multi-disciplinary teams (MDT).
  • Ability to build therapeutic relationships quickly in high-turnover environments.
  • Strong time-management, prioritization, and multitasking capabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a close-knit team or autonomously using own initiative.
