Bank Healthcare Assistant (Band 2) | Whittington Health NHS Trust | Hospital & Community Shifts | Weekly Pay | Work When It Suits You

Care for north London, your way. Join one of London’s leading integrated care organisations and pick up shifts across a busy acute hospital and more than 30 community locations, on a schedule that fits your life, with pay every week.

Why Whittington Health?

  • One Trust, two worlds of care. Whittington Health brings The Whittington Hospital in Archway and community services in Islington and Haringey together in one organisation. Build experience in both without changing employer.
  • A real community hospital. Care has been delivered on the Whittington site for over 500 years, and the Trust is valued by the local people it serves.
  • Scale and variety. Safe, personal, coordinated care for more than 500,000 people, with services reaching Barnet, Enfield and Camden too.
  • Specialist strength in older people’s care, alongside A&E, ambulatory care, surgery, maternity, therapies and elderly care.
  • A team of more than 4,400 staff with a strong culture of education and development.

The role

As a Band 2 Healthcare Assistant, you’ll be at the heart of patient care. Working under the guidance of registered nurses, you’ll give patients the physical and emotional support that makes their stay, or their care at home, safe, comfortable and dignified.

Where you could work

  • Acute: medical and surgical wards, A&E, ambulatory care, older people’s care and outpatient areas at The Whittington Hospital.
  • Community: community-based teams and clinics across Islington and Haringey, supporting patients closer to home.

What you’ll do

Personal care and dignity

  • Help patients with washing, bathing, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene and using the toilet or commode.
  • Protect privacy and dignity at all times, including when chaperoning patients.
  • Support patients to stay as independent as possible.

Nutrition and hydration

  • Serve meals, help patients choose from menus and support those who need help eating and drinking.
  • Complete food and fluid charts accurately and tell the nurse in charge about any concerns.

Mobility and safety

  • Help patients move and reposition safely using aids and equipment such as hoists, following moving and handling training.
  • Support pressure area care and falls prevention, following the SSKIN approach.
  • Escort patients to other departments in line with Trust policy.

Observations

  • Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and weight as instructed, once trained.
  • Spot changes in a patient’s condition and report them promptly to a registered nurse.

Ward and clinic support

  • Make beds, restock supplies, clean patient equipment and keep clinical areas clean, tidy and safe.
  • Collect samples such as urine or stool, and help prepare treatment areas.
  • Follow infection prevention and control practice, including hand hygiene and safe disposal of waste and body fluids.

Communication and records

  • Keep patient records accurate and up to date, on paper and on electronic systems.
  • Reassure patients, families and carers, and pass on information clearly and kindly.
  • Take part in handovers and work closely with nurses, doctors, therapists and support colleagues.
