Senior Bank Healthcare Assistant (Band 3) | Whittington Health NHS Trust | Use Your Clinical Skills in Hospital & Community | Weekly Pay | Flexible Shifts

Put your clinical skills to work where they matter most. Whittington Health is looking for experienced Band 3 Healthcare Assistants who want variety, responsibility and flexibility, from a busy acute hospital to patients’ own homes across north London, with pay every week.

Why Whittington Health?

  • One Trust, two worlds of care. Whittington Health brings The Whittington Hospital in Archway and community services in Islington and Haringey together in one integrated care organisation. Few Trusts let you work across acute and community care so easily.
  • Keep your skills sharp and broad. From acute wards and A&E to community nursing teams, every setting stretches your clinical practice in a different way.
  • Help keep people out of hospital. In community settings you’ll support care that prevents unnecessary admissions and helps patients home sooner.
  • Scale and heritage. Care for more than 500,000 people, from a site that has delivered care for over 500 years, with a team of more than 4,400 staff.
  • Specialist strength in older people’s care, alongside A&E, ambulatory care, surgery, maternity and therapies.

The role

As a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant, you’ll deliver hands-on personal and clinical care under the delegation of registered nurses. You’ll use your experience to spot deterioration early, carry out delegated clinical tasks, organise your own workload and support less experienced colleagues. In the community, you may work independently in patients’ homes within agreed care plans.

Where you could work

  • Acute: medical and surgical wards, A&E, ambulatory care, older people’s care and outpatient areas at The Whittington Hospital.
  • Community: district nursing and other community teams across Islington and Haringey, caring for patients in their own homes and in clinics.

What you’ll do

Clinical care (once trained and assessed as competent)

  • Record full sets of observations, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and oxygen saturation, and calculate early warning scores such as NEWS2.
  • Carry out blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, ECGs and specimen collection.
  • Perform venepuncture, and cannulation where the area requires it.
  • Complete simple wound dressings, and remove cannulas and urinary catheters.
  • Support catheter care, continence and bowel care.
  • Deliver pressure area care using the SSKIN bundle.
  • In community settings, and where trained, give oral medication and medicines via gastrostomy, and set up gastrostomy feeds.
  • Support patients with diabetes and long-term conditions, and contribute to palliative and end-of-life care.

Assessing and escalating

  • Take part in assessing care needs and delivering care plans with patients and carers.
  • Recognise changes in a patient’s condition and escalate promptly to the registered nurse.
  • Initiate referrals to other services, including social services, where appropriate.

Personal care and wellbeing

  • Provide personal care, nutrition and hydration support, and safe mobility and repositioning.
  • Keep accurate food and fluid charts and intake and output records.
  • Offer comfort and reassurance to patients and families, including those in distress.

Leading by example

  • Organise your own workload and set priorities with the nurse in charge, and help organise the work of Band 2 colleagues where appropriate.
  • Work unsupervised where competent, especially on community visits.
  • Help induct and support new starters, and share your skills with others.
  • Take part in team meetings, clinical audit and service improvement.

Safety, governance and records

  • Keep paper and electronic patient records accurate, timely and complete.
  • Follow infection prevention and control practice, safeguarding procedures for children and adults, and Trust policies.
  • Report incidents and risks, and maintain patient confidentiality.
