St Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts)are searching for an experienced and passionate Speech and Language Therapist  to join their highly skilled RLH Acute team.

We operate from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to our services to provide them with the healthcare they need.

Job purpose:

The postholder will be a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist primarily working at the Royal London Hospital although some rotations are based within Community or Outpatient settings and there is also an opportunity for a rotation in the Acute Paediatric SLT team. The post holder will be part of a team providing specialist assessment and treatment to adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties. The postholder will work as part of the acute SLT team and wider MDT and will be supported and supervised by a Highly Specialist SLT as well as their Clinical Lead SLT. The postholder may be required to supervise band 5 staff if appropriate.  

The post is rotational. The teams the post rotate through are as follows:

• Royal London Hospital Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Stroke Rehabilitation Unit (SRU) and Tower Hamlets Community Stroke Services (CST)
• Neurology and Neurosurgery wards
• Rapid Access to Acute Rehabilitation (RAAR)
• General Medical & Surgical wards
• Neurology & Neurosurgery including Major Trauma
• Tower Hamlets Community Neuro Team
• Adult Critical Care
• Acute Paediatrics
• Head & Neck / ENT

The rotations are subject to changes or re-configuration of the services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• To independently manage caseload of adults with swallowing and communication disorders in the acute inpatient setting across stroke, neuroscience, care of older people, respiratory and trauma pathways 
• To be actively involved in service development as required by Senior SLT colleagues to contribute to the on- going development of specialist clinical pathways in rehabilitation and the community.
• To work clinically along the pathways using specialist knowledge to assess, differentially diagnose and manage the caseload and with the support of more senior colleagues where required.
• To deliver training/teaching to other health professionals and students
• To work closely with all members of the community multi-disciplinary team
• To supervise junior SLT’s as required and contribute to the supportive ethos within the team
• To work flexibly in line with the needs of the service  

Requirements:

• Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent 
• Health Professions Council – Licence to Practice 
• Ongoing evidence of CPD
• Experience of working with adults with acquired communication/swallowing disorders 
• Competent to work independently with patients with swallowing and communication deficits
• Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT)
• Experience delivering training, advice, or support to other professionals, patients, and/or carers
• Experience of Quality Improvement work / working through PDSA cycles / Project work Sound knowledge of acquired communication and swallowing disorders, their assessment, and evidence-based intervention approaches
• Awareness of relevant national policies, professional standards and current best practice guidance (e.g. RCSLT, NICE)
• Understanding of clinical governance, confidentiality, and safeguarding principles
• Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act, consent, and the role of the SLT in decision-making and risk management
• Awareness of Outcome Measures and their clinical application
• Knowledge of cultural and linguistic issues in working with a multi-cultural caseload. Ability to prioritise workload, manage time effectively, and maintain accurate, clear clinical records in line with professional standards
• Excellent interpersonal skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills
• Negotiation, Problem solving and conflict resolution skills 
• Demonstrates good analytical and reflection skills 
• Good presentation skills, both written and verbal 
• Ability to work independently and to take initiative 
• Ability to acknowledge need for and seek support 
• Ability to use reflective practice to guide clinical reasoning and service improvement.
• Basic computer literacy skills
