Department / Division:
Main theatres on Podium 3 have 12 operating theatres, Receiving Bay, Recovery area for adults and a dedicated paediatric recovery area.
Day Surgery Unit is situated on Tower 2 has 2 theatres, 1st stage recovery and ward area. Hybrid theatre in Tower 2 is co-located to the Day Surgery unit.
McMillan Cancer Centre Operating has an operating theatre and procedure room and 1st and 2nd stage recovery.
Elizabeth Gareth Anderson obstetric hospital has 2 operating theatres and 1st stage recovery.
Sterile services are a key service supporting all the Trust's activities. The department is located at UCH podium 4.
The Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering provides expert physical science support to many activities within the Trust.
The Theatres & Anaesthetics division also provides a full Pre-assessment Service, Surgical Reception, Acute and Chronic Pain Teams.
Job Purpose:
The Band 3 Theatre Circulating Assistant is a member of the multidisciplinary operating theatre team who works under the delegation and supervision of a registered practitioner (nurse or operating department practitioner) to support the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centredperioperative care.
The post holder will contribute to maintaining a safe, clean and efficient operating theatre environment, ensuring that theatres are appropriately prepared, stocked and equipped to support the delivery of surgical procedures across a range of specialties.
The post holder will undertake delegated circulating duties for which they have been trained and assessed as competent, including preparing theatre equipment and consumables, assisting with patient positioning and transfers, supporting the safe handling of specimens, maintaining stock levels, and responding promptly to the needs of the surgical team during procedures.
They will contribute to patient safety by adhering to Trust policies, infection prevention and control standards, health and safety requirements, and by supporting compliance with the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and other national patient safety initiatives.
The Band 3 Theatre Circulating Assistant will work collaboratively with registered practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary team to facilitate the efficient running of operating lists, support patient flow through the theatre department, and ensure that equipment and resources are available to meet clinical demand. They will maintain accurate documentation appropriate to their role and escalate any concerns regarding patient safety, equipment or the clinical environment to the registered practitioner in charge.
The post holder will support the induction and development of new support staff and learners, acting as a positive role model within the clinical environment. They will maintain and develop their knowledge and skills through mandatory training, competency-based assessments and continuing development in line with Trust requirements. This role requires flexibility, professionalism and the ability to adapt to the changing operational needs of the theatre department while consistently contributing to the delivery of a safe, effective and compassionate perioperative service.
Requirements:
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent relevant experience / HSC Diploma level 3 Advanced / Higher apprenticeship level 3
- Experience in operating theatre , interventional areas or perioperative setting.
- Experience in carrying out assigned duties/assisting qualified staff after training.
- Working in a team.
- Working in a Health Care or related setting.
- Good standard of written and spoken English.
