Band 3 - Phlebotomist - UCLH - London

University College London Hospitals (UCLH) are on the lookout for a committed and passionate Phlebotomist to join their highly skilled team to provide phlebotomy [venesection] services to the Epilepsy Society’s patients in an inpatient and outpatient setting, as required.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• To undertake venesection (phlebotomy) for patients attending Epilepsy Society either as in-patients or as out-patients.

• To provide a support service to the TDM Unit including the preparation and processing of clinical specimens for biological analysis in accordance with the Unit’s Policies and Procedures including Health & Safety.

• To centrifuge bloods, prepare sera and store as necessary. Also, to package samples as necessary for dispatch to outside laboratories.

• To enter data for patient and specimen requests onto the Pathology computer system.

• To ensure stocks of phlebotomy materials are maintained.

• To support on-going research activities through phlebotomy, as/when required.

• To dispose of laboratory/phlebotomy waste according to policies and procedures.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Experience in undertaking phlebotomy/ Previous venepuncture skills.

• GCSE basic grade English and Maths or equivalent.

• Keyboard skills (data entry).

• Attention to detail.

• Ability to work with all grades of staff as part of a team.

• Good interpersonal skills and a calming and reassuring disposition when dealing with patients.

• Proven organisational skills.

• Able to communicate clearly with team members, clinical colleagues, and patients.

• Ability to work flexibly either alone or as part of a team.

• Ability to work with biological hazardous samples.

• Ability to understand and maintain patient confidentiality.
