Stroke Consultant - Portsmouth

Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust is looking for a passionate and forward-thinking Stroke Medicine Consultant (s) to join our incredibly dedicated Stroke Team of Consultants, Specialist Doctors, Nurses, therapists, and administration. We collaborate with the Isle of Wight Trust to give Stroke Consultant support to St Mary's Hospital five days a week, while also providing Stroke patients with 24/7 care at Queen Alexandra Hospital seven days a week.

With 12 Hyper-Acute Stroke Beds and 22 Acute Stroke Beds, Queen Alexandra Hospital is a well-established Acute Stroke Centre. In addition, we have a recently constructed 30 bed onsite Rehabilitation Unit, TIA Clinic, and our own Community Stroke Rehabilitation Team.

There is a chance to expand our Stroke Pathway work in collaboration with the Isle of Wight Trust. Depending on the department's needs and the applicant's desire, any position can include establishing stroke specialised services.  Post holders are encouraged to participate in service improvement programmes, audits, research, and teaching, as well as to represent the clinical service centre at the college and national levels.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will be a Stroke Consultant who is either on the Specialist Register for Stroke Medicine or General Medicine.  They will have a strong interest in stroke medicine in both acute and community settings. The job may entail:

  • In-patient and out-patient care for patients referred with suspected stroke or TIA
  • To participate in clinical and other activities such audit, research and governance with the object of ensuring ongoing high standards of patient care
  • To contribute to the provision of a 24-hour acute stroke service delivering thrombolysis and advising on other specialist treatments
  • To contribute to the consultant ward rounds at weekends and public holidays
  • To provide clinical advice for community stroke services as required
  • To provide continuing medical education and conduct undergraduate and post graduate teaching as appropriate
  • To contribute to the development of clinical quality and effectiveness in other clinical areas where these overlap with developments in stroke care
  • Community working including outpatient activity, virtual wards, Parkinson’s Disease Clinics and admission avoidance.
