Mental Health HCA – Band 3

The Mental Health Support Worker (MHSW) – is responsible for providing care and therapeutic support to patients and their families in conjunction with the Specialist Mental Health Practitioner and directed by members of the wider multidisciplinary network, including from within the Paediatric; Adult and Older People’s Mental Health Liaison Service. The ECSW works with learning disability liaison teams; alcohol liaison teams and alcohol liaison teams.

The MHSW will work closely with patients who are prescribed 1:1 care, and who may need care with physical interventions. The ability to be trained in, and carry out physical interventions is a core requirement of this role

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical/Professional

  • Demonstrating caring, compassionate, professional behaviour fostering trust and confidence in the service for people in your care.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives, and members of the Multidisciplinary network of professionals regarding all aspects of care demonstrating a range of appropriate communication skills.
  • To form professional relationships with patients and communicate with them in a way that respects their views, autonomy, and culture.
  • Engage with and gather information from patients and carers to support a multidisciplinary formulation (understanding) and care plan, recognising and responding appropriately to the emotional needs of patients.
  • Contribute to a full range of routine care tasks such as supporting self-care and completing routine observations, including physical observations when required.
  • Work cohesively with all members of the ward team and promote effective liaison with all members of the multidisciplinary care network in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided at all times.
  • Communicating with colleagues and sharing key information to support care planning and implementing care.
  • Contributing to risk assessment and risk management planning by identifying and reporting issues of concern to the named nurse/nurse in charge and supporting multidisciplinary review.
  • Contribute to assessment and support the development and implementation of care plans in conjunction with a Registered Nurse/Practitioner and the Mental Health Practitioners.
  • To participate in the management of challenging or disturbed behaviour in accordance with the Trust procedures.
  • Following assessment to assist in therapeutic intervention and work with individuals in a variety of ways.  This may include delivering specified aspects of therapeutic interventions under supervision from a registered professional.
  • To use technical/creative skills to engage service uses in therapeutic activities which promote independence, resilience, and well-being, facilitate recreational or social activities as part of daily activities and promote engagement with educational services.
  • To provide ongoing continuous assessment and adjustment of interventions, develop and implement new activities in response to young people’s needs, recording and escalating concerns relating to care accurately and in a timely way.
  • Maintaining a good standard of record keeping that meets the expected standards in the nursing notes and to ensure that a qualified member of staff countersigns entries.
  • Maintaining a safe clinical environment, prevention, and control of infection by ensuring compliance with policies, standards and procedures and undertaking delegated tasks to contribute to the safe and smooth running of the ward and service.
  • Participate in clinical supervision to discuss casework, make plans for action, reflect on and implement best practice.
  • Overcome barriers to understanding that may be a result of mental health care need.
  • Undertake safe transfer escort of patients between settings after appropriate training and delegation from the Registered Nurse.

Experience

Essential

  •  Previous NHS Mental Health Support Worker Experience 
  • NVQ Level 3/QCF Level 3 in Health or Social Care or equivalent or working towards.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of working in an NHS Acute Hospital setting.
  • Working knowledge of mental health issues.
  • Experience of working with young people who are experiencing mental health needs.
  • Experience of working with a range of learning disabilities, challenging behaviour, eating disorders.
  • Advocacy skills
  • Ability to adapt to change within working situation
  • Strong customer service skills
