Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust are searching for a passionate Medical Lab Assistant to join their highly skilled team.

This role is a 1 year fixed term, undertaking both screening and symptomatic breast work to support our large breast unit.  Symptomatic and breast screening is both undertaken at our site and PHU diagnose and treat 700 breast cancers per year.

Job Purpose:

The Blood Sciences Senior Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA’s) assist in the provision of a high quality and efficient diagnostic service to patients and medical staff by:

1. Supervising MLA’s in the Sample Reception section of the laboratory in an efficient, positive and competent manner.

2. Undertaking pre and post analytical sample processing.

3. Working as part of an effective supervisory team to provide a competent and high quality service.

4. Helping provide a safe, clean and well-maintained department.

5. The post holder will jointly supervise a team of Medical Laboratory Assistants and Apprentice Medical Laboratory Assistants and have some responsibility for resource management.

Requirements:

• Good general education including English Language GCSE and a science based qualification (QCF level 3 or equivalent experience)

• At least 1 year experience working in a hospital laboratory environment • Experience with electronic handling of data Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant (AfC Band 3)

• Fluent and accurate keyboard skills

• Ability to work using own initiative and unsupervised

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to motivate othersDecision making and prioritisation skills

• The ability to remain calm and focused

• Methodical, accurate and able to follow laid down procedures
