Here at Kingston Hospital Staff Bank, we have vacancies available for Band 5 Paediatric Nurses (RNc). 

The post holder will be required to work effectively as part of the team to ensure a high standard of care is provided. They will be responsible for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of care. She/he will, following a period of preceptorship, be able to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision. The post holder will liaise closely with parents/carers and all members of the multidisciplinary team and thus ensure effective communication of all relevant information.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/OUTCOMES:

 

Clinical

1. To be professionally accountable and to recognise own limitations of practice within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

2. To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care in negotiation with the child and their family/carers, adapting to the individual needs of the child.

3. To be able to implement basic nursing care independently and new or more complex care with minimal supervision.

4. To plan, at the earliest possible opportunity, the discharge of the patient, liaising closely with the multidisciplinary and primary health care team.

5. To achieve, monitor and maintain set standards of nursing care, ensuring safe practice at all times.

6. Maintain a safe environment at all times ensuring the safety of the child is paramount, areas are clean and tidy and equipment is cleaned following use.

7. To recognise the importance of the role of the play specialist and involve as necessary.

8. Participate in the measurement of nursing outcomes through audit.

9. Promote evidence based practice and support research initiatives, which are of benefit to patient care, in accordance with Clinical Governance guidelines.

10. To ensure that all Trust policies and procedures are adhered to and that the children’s unit philosophy of care is applied at all times.

11. To communicate effectively with staff and patients to ensure that the highest possible standard of care is provided to children and their families and that documentation is contemporaneous and comprehensive.

12. Co-ordinate the care of a group of patients demonstrating effective problem solving and prioritisation skills

13. Work flexibly to meet service need including working in other areas of the paediatric unit and undertaking day, night and weekend shifts when required.

Managerial

1. Delegate suitable clinical care to junior staff.

2. To develop supervisory skills in order to actively support junior and untrained staff.

3. To comply with Trust policies and to ensure that any ward incident is documented and drawn to the attention of the Sister/Team Leader immediately.

4. To ensure the confidentiality of patient information at all times.

5. To ensure that you have received adequate training in order to safely use and maintain equipment.

6. To develop an awareness of budgetary control, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and effectively.

Communications

1. Communicate effectively with children, their families, colleagues and the multidisciplinary team.

2. Participate in the multidisciplinary decision making process regarding changes in care.

3. Be able to demonstrate listening skills and the use of non-verbal cues.

4. Demonstrate an awareness of others’ emotional, physical and psychological situation and responds sensitively.

Education and Training/Self-Development

  1. Mentor, after a period of preceptorship, nursing students ensuring that support and feedback are provided as appropriate.
  2. Participate in the development and delivery of teaching initiatives.
  3. Participate in any research undertaken in the unit.
  4. Participate in family education programmes.
  5. Participate in the orientation of new members of staff to the ward in conjunction with a senior member of the nursing team.
  6. Demonstrate a commitment to personal continuing education.
  7. Demonstrate an awareness of clinical governance issues.
  8. Develop the skills of assessing colleagues in the clinical setting
  9. Demonstrate the ability to reflect and learn lessons
  10. Identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/education as required.
  11. Participate in an annual individual performance review process where objectives will be agreed, performance monitored and personal development needs discussed.
  12. To attend all statutory and mandatory training as and when required to do so.
  13. Act responsibly in respect of colleague’s health, safety and welfare following safe work practices and complying with the Trust’s Health and Safety Policies.
  14. Adhere to all Trust Policies as applicable.
