The post holder will be a member of the multidisciplinary Paediatric team at North Middlesex Hospital. They will be expected to work under the direction of a qualified nurse, assisting in the care of infants and their families/carers and in maintaining a safe and comfortable environment.

 The post holder will be expected to provide care with direct supervision until deemed competent by a qualified neonatal nurse in a particular activity. The post holder will also be expected to contribute towards the effectiveness of the department, improving the service as required.

 

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To undertake the general physical and social care of babies whilst enabling parents/carers to participate in that care

  • To document all patient details to the required standard relating to the admission, planning, implementation and evaluation of care in the nursing notes and to be able to coherently handover care to another member of staff

  • To record and monitor vital signs, recognising when to inform nursing staff of a change in the baby's condition

  • To respond to clinical emergencies as required, ensuring that he/she is competent in Basic Neonatal Life support

  • To support a welcoming environment in the Neonatal Unit; communicating with parents/carers and involving them in the planning and delivery of care by working together in partnership

  • To deal with enquiries/complaints from parents/carers and visitors in a courteous and timely manner, informing a senior member of staff of any actions taken and when necessary referring an enquiry to a more appropriate member of staff

  • To support and promote breastfeeding in line with the Baby Friendly initiative, but demonstrating a non judgemental approach regarding the mother's feeding intentions

  • Be familiar with safeguarding procedures and escalate any concerns appropriately

  • To work collaboratively with the team in planning safe discharge home

  • To undertake mandatory training as identified by the Trust

  • To participate in clinical trials relevant to neonatal care

GCSE’s A-C with maths & English or equivalent

NNEB or equivalent

Experience of childcare

To have undertaken a placement in a hospital setting

Knowledge of confidentiality issues

Previous experience of working with families
