Great care to every patient, every day

In recent years, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust has grown increasingly busy. However, thanks to the unfailing hard work and commitment of staff and volunteers, the hospitals – which include Epsom Hospital, St Helier Hospital, Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children and Sutton Hospital - continue to provide patients with the highest levels of care.

This is an NHS trust where you can feel proud of the work you do and where you will be appreciated. There is a clearly defined set of annual objectives, which can be grouped into five sections: patients, services, people, finances and future. All staff and volunteers work towards, and are involved in delivering on these objectives each year.

The trust's vision is to be the principal provider of high quality, patient-centred, healthcare to the populations of Merton, Sutton, Epsom and their surrounding areas. Improving the quality and safety of services to patients is at the core of everything the hospitals do; they strive continually to improve their effectiveness, efficiency and accessibility of services; to be the first choice for patients; to ensure their future affordability and clinical sustainability and to be a centre of excellence for research and teaching.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust continually look to identify ways in which it can provide increased benefits to patients. This can be through expanding and enhancing their range of services, through development of partnerships and networks, or through integration with other care providers. At the heart of their hospitals lie a set of values that drive continual improvements to the service and care given to patients and their family and friends. These values guide staff and volunteers on how they work together and how they should treat each other. The trust holds workshops to refresh staff at the hospitals on the principles and their supporting behaviours to ensure staff are able to maintain them and live up to them in their day to day work.

Working with staff from across all their hospitals, the trust has agreed some values that will keep them at the forefront of what they do - these values are:

  • Putting the patient first
  • Work as one team
  • Respect each other
  • Protect the environment
  • Strive for continuous improvement

The trust’s values are reinforced through the actions of staff and volunteers and can account for recent positive results in the NHS staff survey. Over 80% of staff who work at an Epsom and St Helier hospitals feel satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they are able to deliver while over 90% of staff agree that their role makes a difference to patients.
