Barts Health is the largest NHS Hospital Trust in the UK, supporting communities in East London and beyond with a population of 2.5 million. The Barts Health NHS Trust was established in 2012, and consists of six major London hospitals including Mile End Hospital, The London Chest Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, Newham University Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital.

The Trust is able to make a real change in communities in and around East London through a set of values that affect all core behaviours held by their workers and staff. These include: being caring and compassionate with patients, staff and partners; actively listening; understanding and responding to patients, staff and partners; continuously improving and innovating for patient safety; achieving ambitious results by working together; and valuing every member of staff and their contributions to the care of patients.

The Barts Health Heroes initiative recognise outstanding staff who really live the Trust’s values. Everyone working at Barts Health, whether directly employed by the Trust, by one of their partner organisations, or as a volunteer, can be nominated. Prizes are awarded for both teams and individuals.

The Barts Health NHS Trust values directly impact their objectives, which include 14 priorities to support excellent clinical outcomes, health improvements, academic and research-based services, and the overall health system. Among these priorities are: the focus to maintain the high quality provision of safe and compassionate care for patients achieved over the past year and into the future; the development of culture change to secure levels of staff engagement and patient satisfaction; improved research capacity and capability; and overall, support the improvement of health in East London through working with colleagues in the Trust, boroughs, CCGs, primary care and universities.

The Trust is committed to eliminating discrimination, valuing diversity and promoting equality of opportunity in everything they do. They aim to ensure that their services and employment practices are a true reflection of their commitment to equal opportunity. The local areas, Newham and Tower Hamlets, together with Waltham Forest, are among London’s youngest, most diverse and most deprived communities, with a significantly higher proportion of people aged 24 and under than the UK average. Parts of north-east London are also anticipating an increase in residents aged over 65, with resultant implications for healthcare as older people are generally higher users of health services. As a health care provider and a major local employer, the Trust recognises the important role they play in the wider community to promote equality and eliminate discrimination.
